Woodbridge backed for Beijing

Modern pentathlete Nick Woodbridge has been backed to become a Shropshire Olympian – and a potential medalist – in Beijing this summer.
Georgina Harland, who won bronze in Athens in 2004, believes Woodbridge – from New Works, Telford – and Sam Weale have the attributes to qualify for this summer’s sporting jamboree.
Harland watched Woodbridge finish eighth in a World Cup event at Millfield School in Somerset a little over a week ago, while Weale grabbed the bronze, and she believes the duo are capable of forcing their way into the 36-strong Olympic field.”It’s a really exciting time for the British men’s team,” said Harland. “They’ve taken a big step forward this year in terms of their qualification for Beijing.
“Millfield was a great result for Sam, and we shouldn’t forget that last year Nick was on the podium at a World Cup too.
“It’s a really exciting time for them both. The next eight weeks are going to be crucial for them, but they have a really realistic chance of qualifying for Beijing.
“And they showed at Millfield that it’s not just about qualification. If they do qualify they’ve got the potential to win a medal as well.
“They have to keep their heads together now, stay healthy and go out there and show the world what they can do.
Woodbridge and Weale will be looking to add to their Olympic ranking points in the fourth round of the World Cup in Madrid, which was getting under way today.
