Jury told of phone worn by accused
Thursday 10th April 2008, 11:40AM BST.
One of the men accused of murdering a Shropshire “gentle giant” allegedly had the victim’s mobile phone when he tried to sell jewellery stolen from another murder victim, a court heard.
CCTV footage was shown of Gabriel Bhengu and Jabu Mbowane trying to sell a gold necklace at Carats jewellers in Wolverhampton on April 25 last year.
The prosecution claim Bhengu was wearing Neil Williams’s Nokia mobile phone around his neck at the time, while the gold chain was one stolen from Andrew Owen when he was allegedly murdered in Sedgley on April 15 last year.
The two men deny murdering 41-year-old Mr Williams from Stirchley, Telford, on April 5 last year. The pair, along with Kashia Allen, 22, also deny murdering 42-year-old Mr Owen.
Yesterday, Wolverhampton Crown Court was shown CCTV footage from Carats jewellers, where Bhengu and Mbowane tried to sell a gold ring which the prosecution claim belonged to Mr Owen.
Mr Roger Smith QC, prosecuting, had previously told the jury Bhengu was wearing Mr Williams’s mobile phone during the visit to the shop. It is claimed Mr Williams’s watch was found at the scene of Mr Owen’s murder 10 days later.
Mr Williams was robbed of his possessions as he lay fighting for his life on a footpath off Churncote, Stirchley.
