Council one of best in country

Thursday 10th April 2008, 11:40AM BST.

Telford & Wrekin Council is officially ranked one of the best authorities in the country, with the borough enjoying high employment and falling crime, according to national watchdogs.

It is also hailed for promoting equality and diversity, providing good education, boosting recycling and providing good value for money and low levels of council tax.

The accolade comes in the Audit Commission’s annual scrutiny which has awarded the council the top four star rating.

It says: “Telford & Wrekin Council is improving well and we have classified it as four star in its current level of performance.”

Highlighted for praise by the Audit Commission is the start of the £4.2 million Donnington Rail Freight terminal project and the Hadley Learning Community. But it says the council needs to address absence rates at secondary schools and teenage pregnancies.

Did they ask the public or just the council?

T&W have consistently messed up the well designed town of Telford for no good reason.

The public sector are judged by another public sector quango so can we really believe their findings.

If the schools are so good why are T&W handing over the Ab Dab to the private sector ?

Believe this nonsense at your peril !!

I don’t know about the Audit Commission, but I for one wouldn’t bother taking a complaint to the Local Government Ombudsman – the three Ombudmen for England and Wales are ALL former council Chief Executive Officers.

Are you having a laugh Angry Man? Telford is not well designed in the slightest, in fact I’d say it is one of the worst designed towns in the UK. Except for Milton Keynes maybe.

Grey, It was fairly well designed in terms of layout and accessibilty back in the seventies but since they have played about with it over the last ten years it is starting to look a mess and is now almost immpossible to get from one end to the other in any reasonable time. Many bus routes that existed 30 years ago are virtually non existent now and the roads are a joke.

I wasn’t talking about the ability to drive around the town. In my opinion a town that was designed for cars ahead of people is what makes it so bad. What about the segregation of uses? Have you tried walking between different districts? There are no direct routes and they are often poorly lit with no natural surveilance like you get walking along a street lined with houses etc. As for the public transport, I don’t think the council can do that much about it and the low density nature of Telfords layout makes public transport uneconomical and generally more difficult to provide.

you can drive from one end of telford to the other in 5 minutes ( Dawley to Trench ) yet it takes half an hour to get from castlefields to castle forgate in shrewsbury.
how can telford possibly be a poor design.

In that case grey you haven’t lived here as long as me and believe me , bus services between the old parts have deteriated, ask any long term local. Spencer try driving from wellington to sutton hill , that is one end to the other and you would be lucky to do it in 20 mins now but it may have been possible 10 years ago.
