Concerned traders and residents of a Shropshire town are calling for roadworks on a main through road to be postponed until winter to minimise disruption to businesses.

Harley Bank on the A458 near Much Wenlock will be shut for up to six weeks in the summer while work is carried out to make the bank safe following growing concerns about rocks falling on to the road.

Businesses in Much Wenlock say they fear the worst for their tourism season, which was also hit last year due to the summer’s floods. The announcement on the scheme comes less than a month after work finished on improvements to the Gaskell Arms corner on the A458 in Much Wenlock which caused disruption.

Members of Much Wenlock Town Council have urged residents and traders to attend a public consultation on the plans which will take place on Tuesday at 6pm in the Priory Hall, Much Wenlock.

Anne Downes, town clerk, said: “There is a lot of concern, especially as it’s harvest time and farmers will be moving around. Plus it’s our busiest time in Much Wenlock with tourists. We realise that the work has to be done in the interest of health and safety but it’s scheduling it in the right time.”

Nick Matthews, from the Penny Farthing in The Square, said: “To close a major route for six weeks at any time is bad but in the middle of the summer it is horrendous.”

Laura Owen, spokeswoman for Shropshire County Council, said: “The consultation on April 8 is mainly being aimed at the business community however views are being considered from local councillors who represent the local communities.”
