Bucks’ Jamie faces more agony
Thursday 3rd April 2008, 10:35AM BST.
AFC Telford United’s injury jinx has struck again – with midfielder Jamie Vermiglio being told he is unlikely to play again this season.
Vermiglio had been optimistic of getting the all-clear after an X-ray to check how well his broken metatarsal was healing.
But doctors have said there would be a high risk of a fresh break should he return to action too early.
It is a blow for the Bucks in a week when skipper Jimmy Turner (hamstring) has already been ruled out for two weeks and striker Gary Birch (knee) has been told he needs a cartilage operation.
“Jamie’s foot still hasn’t healed completely,” assistant manager Larry Chambers revealed.”He’s been smashing balls all over the place in training and we were expecting him to get the all-clear, but the doctor has said that, while it is healing well, it is not complete.
“We’ve been told to pretty much rule him out for the rest of the season and we’re looking at getting him looked at again in two weeks.
“We’re going to give it every possible chance we can and, you never know, we might have him for the play-offs if we’re involved.
“Jamie’s prepared to take a chance and play now, but we’ve been told it’s a bone that could quite easily break again and we can’t take the risk.
“It just proves how important a signing Emeka Nwadike may prove to be, because we have lacked a physical presence in the middle of the park while Jamie’s been out, and that’s not being disrespectful to those that have been playing there.”
Meanwhile, there was a slightly better report on centre-back Indy Khela, who has been struggling with a slight thigh strain.
That injury relegated him to the bench last Saturday, but Chambers is hopeful that he will be available for selection for the trip to Blue Square North leaders Kettering this weekend.
