Deadline passes for £7m land sale

A deal to sell land in Shrewsbury worth almost £7 million has not been completed in time, council bosses said today.
Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council had been hoping to complete a deal yesterday to sell the former Tesco site in Arlington Way to Morris Homes.
But a spokeswoman for the council, which owns the land, today said the deadline had passed without the £6.75 million deal being completed.
She said a report would now go to the cabinet on Monday for councillors to decide the future of the land.
Assistant council manager Andy Goldsmith has previously said that councillors would be asked to consider a number of options.
He said the land could be remarketed or withdrawn from the market completely while talks could continue with Morris Homes.
The deal would have paved the way for more than 100 homes to be built on the site, 35 per cent of which would be affordable.
The council could also have put a large slice of cash towards the £12 million project to redevelop the Music Hall while some would have gone to smaller capital schemes.
The report to Monday’s cabinet meeting will be discussed in private as it will be considered an exempt item.
In February the council completed the £2.6 million sale of the Barker Street car park and the £2.5 million sale of New Street nursery.
