Delighted that club has been shut

Saturday 29th March 2008, 10:55AM GMT.

LETTER: My profound thanks go to Telford & Wrekin Council’s licensing department and the police in revoking the licence of Brileigh’s Night Club in Oakengates.

As a resident of the area I consider the police to have done a wonderful job in their covert work in the nightclubs in Oakengates. We have had to put up with noise and nuisance from nightclubs for a long time.

As a town councillor I have received complaints regarding Brileigh’s, which have been passed on to the appropriate people. It has been suspected for a while that it has been serving under-age drinkers.

Nightclub owners are claiming racism, but residents in Oakengates will not tolerate this kind of “hot spot” nightlife that the police have described at this club regardless of the colour or creed. We are all equal in the eyes of God.

The residents of Oakengates are not killjoys and welcome visitors to the area, whether it be to shop, go to the theatre, or enjoy the beverage at the public houses, and nightclubs, but we do expect them to behave themselves and treat the town with respect.

The same goes for nightclub owners. We, with the help of the police, will not tolerate nightclubs that flout the licensing laws, and we expect them to control their customers, not only in the clubs, but outside the premises too. Let Brileigh’s be a warning.

The police and the licensing department have the powers to act, and are now prepared to use them. Well done to you for your bold action in protecting the residents of Oakengates.

is this the final nail in the coffin for a once lively town as the specials said this town is coming like a ghost town, the shops are run down or there charity shops in my day they were called jumble sales 5p to get in,the cally the duke and the local pubs in the oakengates area will all be dead by 2010,just look at dudley town it used to be buzzing on a weekend now its dead,so will the council be putting coaches on for the young clubbers to take them to wolves or shrews, don’t hold ya breathe.

As a regular at The Crown, a couple of doors up from Brileighs, I can tell you now that the queue outside the club of a weekend resembled the queue for an ice-cream van as the average age was about the same.

The Crown, by the way, will still be in business WAY past 2010. It serves great beer, great continental lagers, great whiskeys, great crisps, and the craic is excellent.

Why is a town councilor hiding behind “name and address supplied” either he stands up to be counted and massages his ego with the name councilor or he or she keeps quiet.

Its the likes of clubs like this that cause towns to close, who wants to go out when places like this allow children onto the premises to get drunk.

This venue is well known by 14 – 16 year olds as easy to get into.

If the club cannot or will not act responsible, then close it and keep it closed.

Telford as a whole does not offer anything for the younger person, 10 years ago this town was buzzing with 4 or 5 clubs around Telford/Wellington and 1000s or people out for a good night out – now look at it, why would people go for a night out in Telford, what does it offer? come on Wrekin council take a look at your town and what it offers, roundabouts and a shopping centre?

    I quite agree, Robert.

Telford is hardly a Stairway to Heaven.
