Plant not wanted on doorstep

Tuesday 25th March 2008, 10:50AM GMT.

LETTER: Once again the biomass plant has reared its ugly head with very little change, but the usual nonsense about benefits to Bishop’s Castle of cheaper electricity.

The electricity is going into the grid so we will continue to pay the same to the electricity companies as anyone else.

Cutting carbon dioxide emissions, with extra lorries and burning 24/7, I think not – and I wonder where this generated fund for the town has suddenly come from. It was never mentioned before.

I would also like to draw attention to the fact that there is a big sign which states the area is a business park.

The difference may be subtle, but we were not concerned about businesses or warehouses bringing potential work and finance to the area.

We are worried that an “incinerator” burning non-stop in a valley known to have an inversion atmospheric condition will damage the area in which Mr J Evans does not live.

He doesn’t want it on his doorstep and neither do we.

Gill Lawler, Bishop’s Castle

typical NIMBY. would you rather they burn coal ?? At least wood is carbon neutral – get over your self – you are the one demanding electricity after all

Sorry John I do not know anything about this project but was struck by your comment that wood was carbon neutral can you explain please?

I thought when you burn wood it produces C02 so you must be including re-planting would that be right?

this scheme is about a few wealthy people getting wealthier on the back of us tax payers. this plant will never run at a profit, nor is it intended to. however, the government will pay the operators money for every ton of bio mass burned.
considering the people behind the project are farmers who have lioved affluent lives subsidised by the rest of us, one would think that they have had more than enough from our pockets.
