Election date for seat on council

Wednesday 19th March 2008, 6:59PM GMT.

A by-election is to be held in the borough of Oswestry, following the death of a former mayor.

Councillor Richard Burman, of Porthywaen, died in February following a long illness.

Mr Burman, 77, was a long-serving member of Oswestry Borough Council. He was first elected to the council as an independent candidate for the Sweeney and Trefonen ward in 2003 and in 2005 became mayor of the borough.

But his death has now left a vacant seat in the ward and Oswestry Borough Council is urging people to stand as a candidate in the election to be held on May 1.

Anyone interested in standing must complete nomination papers and return them to the Electoral Services Office at Castle View before noon on April 4.

For more information on standing for the election contact Veronica Catling on (01691) 677208 or e-mail electoralservices@oswestry-bc.gov.uk
