£1,300 aid for racism victims
Wednesday 19th March 2008, 11:50AM GMT.
More than £1,300 has been raised in an appeal to help a Polish family whose Shropshire home was set alight and daubed with racist symbols.
Councillor Eileen Sandford, who organised the appeal, today praised people for their goodwill and support for the family, who live in Kynaston Road, Harlescott, Shrewsbury.
Racist graffiti was sprayed across the front windows and the word “England” written on one of the walls of the property last month. An old carpet was also placed against the front door and set alight.
At the time, the family who live in the property – 29-year-old Grzegorz Tarasewicz, his girlfriend and his brother – spoke of their horror at the attack.
Today Councillor Sandford said £1,341 had been handed over to the family.
In a letter to the family, with other messages of support, she said: “It comes with a tremendous amount of goodwill, which should warm your hearts.
“I hope that reading these letters and knowing that almost everyone I meet – including the residents in Kynaston Road – express their disgust and regrets.”
Mr Tarasewicz said: “I would like to say thank you to all the people who gave us some help after this incident.”
The investigation into the attack is on-going. Three youths arrested in connection with the incident remain on police bail.

im a local person and when i first heard of the incident i admit i turned a blind eye and thought ‘another fall out’ amongst people. then the other night on the there was a documentry on tv about how the polish have all flooded over here and their reasons for doing so and i am ashamed of myself for initial responce to the fire, the programme put shame to the laze abouts and people who think they are too good to do packing/factory/labour jobs, these poles are just trying to make a living and live in peace like the rest of us are and if they do it fairly then good on them and all the best. in life you only reap rewards if you make some kind of effort. so to the family if you are reading this..good luck and may you be happy and live in peace. well done eileen forr the work you have done.

Good to see that the true spirit of Britishness is evident in this case. I don’t agree with much of what Cllr. Eileen Sandford has said in these pages in the past, but my congratulations to her for this effort. No-one who daubs this kind of filth on people’s houses derserves to call themselves British. My parents’ generation fought a war against Naziism.

Whilst this dreadful act cannot in any way be condoned, this is a direct result of Labours “open door” policy. We do not NEED immigrant labour in this country. These people are simply being exploited by greedy capitalists. This government have created a situation where people are better off on benefits and there is no incentive to work. The answer is simple-stop dishing out benefits to those who don’t actually NEED them and get these people into jobs whether they like it or not.If British workers felt more valued perhaps this apathy would not exist.

Many, many years ago, the day following the official
opening of the then, new Shirehall at the Column, graffiti
was sprayed very conspicuously over the front wall of the
building and clearly visible from Abbey Foregate. As many
even now will recall, the town was outraged.
Chief Superintendent A. N. called the local beat Constable
into his office and in his usual way virtually blamed the
officer for doing it himself or allowing it to be done.
He said in effect, “you have a week to find out who did
it or be ready for a change back to shift work in the town,
no ifs, buts or excuses, get to work”.
The Constable (I know him extremely well) went home, got
changed into civvies and started work. Two days later he was
following a group of local idiots along Bishop Street.
They were laughing, joking and boasting of their handi-
work in spraying the Shirehall, they only knew the chap in
civvies at the back of them was a copper when he arrested them.
Moral of the story, this horrible offence of spraying
swastikas on a Polish families house must not be allowed to go
undetected and must be severely punished. We no longer have
Police Officers like we used to do but the local officer
(if there is one)must realise that his credibility as a
copper is at stake. The offenders can be caught given some
gumption and will to succeed. If the offender/s are not
caught, both the Police Senior Officers and the officers
directly responsible should be looked upon as failures.
THEY CAN BE CAUGHT.
