Smith wary of play-off shake up

Monday 17th March 2008, 11:59AM GMT.

Bucks v RedditchBoss Rob Smith believes AFC Telford United are in a four-way scrap for the last two Blue Square North play-off places – despite currently sitting pretty in second. The Bucks beat Redditch 1-0 on Saturday thanks to an injury-time winner from substitute Steve Jagielka, to make it eight wins from their last 11 outings.

But it is the teams in third and fourth places – Stalybridge and Harrogate – who Smith sees as the definites for the play-offs due to their easier run-ins.

And he is then convinced the last two places are between his side, Nuneaton, Southport and Burscough – though he thinks two more wins might just be enough for the Bucks.

Smith went to see leaders Kettering extend their advantage with a 3-0 win at Hyde yesterday and declared: “I still think they will drop points, but it’s theirs to throw away now.

“Our aim from the start has always been the play-offs – and it’s still very tight.

“I think Stalybridge and Harrogate will definitely be in there and then there’s four of us scrapping it out for the two other places.

“Southport could be right in our heels with their games in hand and Nuneaton have been on a good run. Burscough have got the bottom six to play and could have a chance.”

League officials would be left with a dilemma should Burscough make it, as their ground is not up to Blue Square Premier standards and they would not be allowed to be promoted.

Smith believes there is a chance they would not even be allowed to play in the play-offs, handing their opponents a bye to the final.

Meanwhile, Telford’s reserves are in action tonight with Burton Albion the visitors to the New Bucks Head (7.45pm).

Reserve team boss Darren Reid’s line-up could include Saturday’s match-winner Jagielka, midfielder Carl Rodgers, centre-back Richard Teesdale and strikers Luke Reynolds and Justin Marsden.
