Procession marks holy date
Monday 17th March 2008, 11:45AM GMT.
Hundreds of worshippers – and a donkey – took part in a Palm Sunday procession to a Shropshire cathedral to mark the start of the Easter celebrations.
The Right Reverend Brian Noble, Roman Catholic Bishop of Shrewsbury, led the 400-strong group yesterday as they re-enacted Jesus’s entry into Jerusalem more than 2,000 years ago, complete with palm leaves, musical instruments and Hannah the donkey.
Father Jonathan Mitchell, from Shrewsbury Cathedral, who also took part in the procession, said it had been an enjoyable service with lots of children involved. The procession started at 10.45am yesterday at St Winefride’s Convent School, travelling along Belmont and finishing at the cathedral in Town Walls.
Father Mitchell said sometimes the donkey was used in the procession. He said: “All the children got involved and were able to pat the donkey at the end of mass. They had a number of musical instruments such as tambourines and shakers and things that they played in the procession.”
