Fuel raiders target region
Thursday 13th March 2008, 11:43AM GMT.
Thieves have been targeting fuel tanks on farms and in goods yards across Mid Wales because of soaring costs, say police.
Officers have warned farmers and businesses to tighten up security.
Constable Gareth Slaymaker, Newtown community safety officer, said today: “Dyfed-Powys Powys Police believe fuel price rises have prompted thieves to target tanks at farms and goods yards across the county in recent months and are warning businesses that store diesel to be extra vigilant with regards the security of their stock.”
Police advise fuel levels in vehicle tanks be kept as low as possible when not in use and to avoid refilling vehicles before the weekend.
Other advice includes reviewing security measures on site, especially perimeter fencing and lighting.
Police also recommend businesses consider installing CCTV and motion sensors in the vicinity of storage tanks so owners living nearby can be alerted to any trespassers.
Any suspicious visitors or vehicles on site should also be reported and a note made of vehicle registration numbers.
Constable Slaymaker said: “Everyone must play their part in making things more difficult for the thief.”
The rising fuel costs, sparked by the soaring price of crude oil, led to Chancellor Alistair Darling postponing a planned 2p a litre increase in fuel duty in yesterday’s Budget.
Instead, Mr Darling now plans to raise the duty in October.
