Bucks to battle on with set squad
Thursday 13th March 2008, 11:44AM GMT.
Assistant manager Larry Chambers insists AFC Telford United will not look to the transfer market to strengthen their injury-plagued squad. The Bucks Head men have seen their options reduced in recent weeks by a string of injuries, especially in defence.
January signing Stuart Whitehead has been ruled out for six weeks, while Jimmy Turner and Vaughan Thomas have also been on the sidelines.
But Indy Khela’s return to action ahead of schedule has persuaded Chambers and boss Rob Smith that they can cope as they are – providing they get no more injuries.
“With Jimmy and Vaughan not too far away I don’t think we will be doing anything unless things change,” said Chambers.
“Particularly with Indy coming through as well, we think we should be okay.
“If someone goes and gets injured against Redditch on Saturday then we might think differently.”
Chambers has also been encouraged after speaking with Whitehead, who is confident he can return in time for the play-offs if Telford are involved.
Whitehead suffered ankle ligament damage in last Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Gainsborough Trinity.
But his recovery is going smoothly and Chambers added: “I spoke to Stuey yesterday and he’s hopeful of being back for the play-offs.
“That would be a big bonus for us, and I think we will be alright without having to bring anyone else in.”
Meanwhile, the Bucks were left disappointed yesterday after a squad day out at the Cheltenham Festival was ruined when the day’s racing was abandoned due to fears over spectator safety, due to high winds.
The party made a rapid diversion to the Southwell meeting instead and Chambers said: “We had a good day but Southwell’s no Cheltenham!”
