Region on storm warning

dark-clouds.jpgWeather experts today warned of a potentially fierce and damaging storm expected to hit the UK on Monday.

But Shropshire and Mid Wales were expected to miss the worst of the bad weather caused by a band of exceptionally low pressure.

Meteorologists said it could well be the strongest storm of the winter.

Winds gusting up to 70mph are forecast from early on Monday as a band of rain crosses the UK. Exposed areas in the west and near the south coast have been warned to expect winds up to 80mph.

The winds are expected to ease during the day but increase again in the evening, with fierce gusts after dark in the west and south.

Shropshire Star weatherman John Warner said the air pressure in the region could drop to as low as 940 millibars with winds of 35mph and gusts of up to 60mph on Monday.

He said the storm would not be as bad locally, adding: “There will be quite a lot of squally weather with heavy bursts of rain.”
