Plans for 76 new homes backed

Thursday 6th March 2008, 11:28AM GMT.

Controversial plans for two separate housing developments in Church Stretton which would bring 76 new dwellings to the town have been approved.

A meeting of South Shropshire District Council’s planning committee yesterday gave South Shropshire Housing Association consent to go ahead.

The authority considered two separate applications from the housing association.

One scheme was for 42 affordable one and two-bedroom dwellings at Ashbrook, off Lawley Close. The properties will be built in place of the existing Windsor Place.

The second application was for 34 affordable dwellings nearby at Ashbrook.

Councillors voted in favour of both schemes, following a 100-minute debate.

Councillor Peter Relph said he was against the schemes because they would have an adverse effect on the town’s character.

However, Councillor Mark Morris backed the plans. He said the plan to build affordable homes for young families was particularly important to the town.
