Crash worry leads to speed limit change

Thursday 6th March 2008, 10:02AM GMT.

The speed limit on one of Bridgnorth’s main road is to be cut, it was revealed today.

New speed limits will be introduced on the Hermitage Hill following campaigns by action groups.

A combination of 30mph and 40mph limits on Wolverhampton Road in Bridgnorth at Hermitage Hill will be put in place at the start of the next financial year.

The road is currently a 60mph limit but concerns have been raised following several smashes.

Councillor Brian Jones, chairman of Low Town Action Group, said they had been campaigning for some time to get new speed limits.

He said: “We’re very glad about the new speed limit on the Hermitage Hill coming in. The action group has been campaigning for these for some considerable time.

“It will now be 30mph to Lodge Lane and 40mph to the top of the hill.”Shropshire County Council launched a public consultation over the speed limits at the end of last year.

It is set to apply the new limits to the B4363 road, between its junction with the A442 and its junction with the A454.

Highway chiefs said it was in response to concerns over speed-related accidents.

County council spokeswoman, Laura Owen, said: “A reduced speed limit on Hermitage Hill will be put in place at the start of the next financial year. The currently 60mph limit will be reduced to 40mph from the roundabout, then 30mph just before the road’s junction with Lodge Lane through to the next roundabout.

“This new limit has been through formal consultation and is with our consultants so that a detailed design can be put together.”
