Move to wind up chamber
Tuesday 4th March 2008, 6:00AM GMT.
Bridgnorth Chamber of Commerce looks set to fold next month with bosses beginning legal moves to wind it up.
The group, which has been going for more than 60 years, has been struggling due to dwindling numbers.
It called a meeting last month to discuss its future but that was poorly attended, leaving chamber chiefs contemplating its next move.
They will call an AGM in April when it is likely the traders group will call it a day. Its downturn in fortunes has been blamed on the growing influx of national chain stores in the town.
Last week two more family run businesses – The Pine Shop and Bridgnorth Memorials – announced they were to close.
And chamber president Norman Cottrell admitted the decreasing number of family shops has left the chamber facing closure.
He said: “We are based on small businesses and we don’t know where to go with it now.
“The meeting we held last month was a disappointment. There was no real interest in it.
“We are trying to come to some arrangement with the solicitors. It is a poor situation for the town.
“The large multi-nationals are not interested in being involved with the chamber.
“Our AGM is due in April when we will decide what is happening. We’ve been disappointed with the response,” he said.

Is Bridgnorth closing down altogether ? I would have thought with some sad shop closures in the town, highlighted recently in SS news articles, the Chamber should be fighting tooth and nail to stay open – sounds like a bit more time and patience is required !!!
