A PE teacher from Powys has won £10,000 in a TV song writing contest.

Aled Myrddin, 24, who teaches at Ysgol Bro Dyfi, Machynlleth, won the final of Can i Gymru (A Song for Wales) on S4C on Friday.

He was one of the eight who appeared on the show after beating off stiff competition from 105 composers.

He performed his song Atgofion (Memories) which was inspired by his family.

Mr Myrddin will now go onto appear at the Pan-Celtic Festival in Donegal – a Welsh Celtic music event, later this month.

The song was picked by an expert panel and viewers after the final at Afan Lido Centre, Port Talbot.

Mr Myrddin said he planned to buy some recording equipment with part of the winnings.

He said: “I never thought I’d get this far so it’s a dream come true.

“I started composing when I was about 14 years old and I’ve been doing it ever since.”
