Couple on track to marry
Sunday 2nd March 2008, 6:00AM GMT.
A Shropshire railway steward got the surprise of his life when his girlfriend took advantage of the leap year tradition to ask for his hand in marriage while on board a morning train.
Paul Baker, 26, said he was “over the moon” after his partner Gemma Newell, 21, a train cleaner at Shrewsbury Railway Station, popped the question while travelling on the 9.18am Shrewsbury to Milford Haven service on Friday.
The couple met six months ago and Gemma said she had been waiting to ask him to marry her and thought there was no better time than February 29 in which to do it.
Paul, of Newport, said: “We were just on the Milford Haven train when she asked me. I was not expecting it at all and it’s amazing, I’m over the moon.
“I said yes straight away, I love her and we’re both really happy.”
Gemma, who lives in Wolverhampton, said: “We’ve been together six months and I asked him to marry me because I love him.”
The couple, who have not yet considered a date to tie the knot, are searching for a home together in Wolverhampton.
