Price rise not the way to help
Friday 29th February 2008, 11:40AM GMT.
I have to write and congratulate Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council for putting yet another nail in the coffin of the Quarry Swimming Centre.
It has now come up with a way to decrease the number of people using the swimming facility so it has a good reason for not giving us the water space that we now enjoy when the pool is either refurbished or rebuilt.
I am referring, or course, to the increase in prices paid by the over 60s who are not entitled to the Passport to Leisure.
As Malcolm Davies points out in his letter to the press, this could drive swimmers to the private clubs which is not what the council should be doing and after all we do pay our council taxes so that the authority can provide the facilities that we require.
Is there anyone at the council thinking along the right lines which in my opinion is to look for ways of increasing the number of people using the centre?
I was also given a flyer to inform me of the increase in admission charges plus a sort of questionnaire asking for comments etc.
The comments I have put forward in the past is that swimming does not get very much publicity and I have suggested a way that might improve this situation.
I am now looking forward to receiving a reply to my comments which I am assured will be within 10 days.
If you are over 60 years of age and do enjoy your swimming then please join myself and Mr Davies in letting your caring councillors know how you feel.
Doing nothing is not a sensible option.

I too believe the swimming pool is something the council have lost interest in. They do nothing to create an interest in it, continually moaning its costing money and yet they can spend 28 million on a theatre that looks like it belongs on the banks of the thames and to futher strengthen my argument, why are swimmers only allocated something like 18 parking spaces outside the swimming baths ?

it is pointless the pool is dated passed its sell by date , in a silly area with no parking get rid i say most people now have acces to cars and go to rowton or battlefield blubs or welshpool which has more access and i must say the staff and the shrewsbury baths management level i found rather truculent.
