‘Hero’ dad delivers baby girl

Proud dad Kelfyn Stewart has been hailed a hero after delivering his daughter Keelie Elizabeth at home in Telford.The 25-year-old was called into action after his heavily pregnant partner was sent home from hospital by staff who thought she was still hours away from giving birth.
Mr Stewart had taken Laura Dixon, also 25, to Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital after she went into labour.
But midwives there told the couple, from Donnington, to go home and, when it was nearer time, to go to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital because of complications during the births of their sons Carlos, five, and Aston, 21 months.
“Less than 45 minutes after we were sent home, I was calling an ambulance and lying Laura on the bed telling her to push,” said Mr Stewart.
“Within seconds there was a head and Laura thought she was going to lose the baby.
“She was telling me to do anything to save it. Then it clicked so I started telling her to push and the baby just came out.”
“I don’t think I’m a hero but Laura does,” he said. “I think she’s the hero because she did this with no pain relief.”

When I was a student Nurse 25 yrs ago I witnessed a father bringing his baby into the world on the carpet lounge in his house down Aylesbury way in BUCKS.
He was helped by the ambulance men [as they were called then]. When the Midwife eventually arrived she was so incensed that she had beaten to it that she started being bossy, controlling and rude.
I have never forgotten that incident and look back at it with humour now.

Hearty congrats to you both on the safe arrival of your beautiful baby daughter,no doubt a welcome sister for your two boys. This incident could have turned out so badly, and from personal experience I know this is not the first mum to be that has been sent home after being told that they were hours away from delivery. I think that the midwifery staff at PRH may need to take a long hard look at how they assess ladies in labour and perhaps not be so keen to send them home. Well done dad for keeping your cool and being there for your wife and daughter!
