Suffering from the derby blues

Shrews v HerefordAnother frustrating result for the Town and a predictable result to go with it – a 2-1 derby defeat to Hereford, writes our Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.

After yet another defeat we need to be looking over our shoulders at the bottom end of the table. Twelve points clear should be more than enough, but Mansfield have got two games in hand over us. I never felt I would be talking about relegation this season and the sooner we get a few more wins under our belts the better!

I felt Peters made some strange decisions in starting Tierney at centre-half and Darren Moss at right-wing. Surely it would have made more sense to start Moss at centre-half, a position he is familiar with.

Moss seems to be taken off after an hour in nearly all the games he starts and he shouldn’t be playing at all if he can’t last 90 minutes.

A plus was Peters’ decision to start James Meredith, who did a decent job on his debut.

After the game Peters had a dig at Hereford and the fact that their team is made up of loan signings from higher divisions. All I will say to that is that he needs to look at the league table.

I don’t agree that a team should be based on loans who will probably all leave at the end of the season, but this game is about getting results and that is what Hereford have achieved.

It’s amazing how far they have come in such a short space of time and what a difference Sherjill MacDonald made to the game.

I have to ask myself why didn’t Peters try and get him on loan along with Theo Robinson who has also been a big hit this season. They would have done a job for us and would have won us games.

It was a very good attendance on Saturday but I wonder if fans are going to start staying away until the end of the season.

I hope not, but as frustration grows fans cannot be blamed if they do so.

I think the issue of loan signings raised by the blogger is a good one.

Gary Peter’s says he will only bring in loan players who we stand a chance of signing in the future. Langmead is an example of this as he came on loan to us at first, but then sign perminantly when he’d played some games for us. I understand we also stand a reasosnable chance of signing Asa Hall at the end of the season.

Sherjill MacDonald cost WBA £200,000 and by all accounts they want to retain him at the end of the season, so Hereford won’t have him next year if/when the get promoted. The same goes for some of their other loan signings.

Do you go for loans like Hereford have done and try to get short term success, or do you do what Peter’s suggests and only sign loan players you stand a chance of keeping in the long term. At the moment Herefords policy is clearly the most effective, but maybe Towns policy has a longer term sustainability.

Who says Hereford can’t loan more players as good as MacDonald etc. next season, I wouldn’t bet against Graham Turner pulling more rabbits out of the hat. GP says he is not interested in short term fix loans, so that leaves less competition and more loans for the likes of Graham Turner. Hereford have got happy fans, are looking good for promotion and they achieved their objective on Saturday. Thats their tactics it works so you can’t knock it. Sorry sounds like sour grapes Mr Peters. Didn’t we take a season long loan player from West Brom? a certain Mr Nicholson, I am sure GP would not be critical of loans had we taken Macdonald and Hereford Nicholson.
