Leaders still in box seat – Larry

Alfreton sub keeper Laurence Matthewson challengesAssistant manager Larry Chambers today moved to play down the promotion fever sweeping through AFC Telford United by declaring: “The title is still Kettering’s to lose.”A solitary Jon Adams goal was enough to secure victory for Telford on Saturday, the Bucks recording their sixth win in their last seven outings.

And there was an added bonus with Blue Square North leaders Kettering losing 1-0 at home to Burscough. The Shropshire side are now just three points behind, albeit having played a game more.

“Obviously I’m pleased that Kettering lost, but it’s pretty irrelevant because it’s all about what we do,” said Chambers.

“If we keep winning and keep picking points up then it puts pressure on everybody else.

“I still think it’s Kettering’s title. They’ve got the best run-in and the best squad of players, but if we can keep pushing them we know what it’s like to be chased and the pressure can get to the players.

“We’re getting players fit again and there’s a lot of competition for places. Everyone wants to be part of the last 11 games.”

Chambers was delighted to see his side cope with the challenge of a physical and direct Alfreton side to record their eighth away victory of the season.

“It’s a very satisfying performance, really,” he added.

“We were quite critical of the lads before the game. We said some of the away performances had not been great and we knew it would be an ugly game.

“The first half was tight and we didn’t compete as much as we’d like. But in the second half we got on the ball and we hit good areas and ran out deserved winners.

“Mooro (Lee Moore) and Birchy (Gary Birch) both had good chances, and we could have run out winners by a bigger margin.”
