Daniel’s Mill, at Knowle Sands, near BridgnorthA family is battling to save one of Shropshire’s major tourist attractions following flood damage.

Owners of Daniel’s Mill, at Knowle Sands, near Bridgnorth, have revealed that around £100,000 is needed to get the grade II listed corn mill fully operational following the severe damage caused during last June’s storms.

The mill wheel is still out of action because it catches a wall that was pushed forward by the force of the flood water. Now the insurance ombudsman has been called into the battle to help secure the tourist attraction.

Ian George, whose family own the landmark, said a technicality had restricted an initial offer from their insurers of £28,000.

He said: “That does not cover the professional costs and remedial work. We have had three quotes just for rebuilding the ‘shed’ – an outbuilding – for about £40,000.

“We have decided to go to the insurance ombudsman in our battle to get the insurance fully met.”

Grants are now being sought from organisations including Bridgnorth District Council.

He said the family was extremely grateful to individuals who had made donations which currently total about £1,400 and described their response as “absolutely fantastic.”

A further boost came when district council leader Elizabeth Yeomans and chairman Les Winwood decided to find £150 between them so that a cheque can be presented tomorrow.

Councillor Winwood said: “The effect of the storms on Daniel’s Mill were devastating and it is most important that it reopens as a tourist attraction.

The mill is owned by Alan George, his sons Peter and Ian and daughter Anne Dingley and has belonged to the family for 300 years.

Individuals and organisations wishing to contribute to the appeal fund can send donations to Daniel’s Mill, Eardington, near Bridgnorth, WV16 5LJ (cheques made payable to Daniel’s Mill Restoration Fund), or contact (01746) 762753 for further information.
