What sort of wimps are we?
Saturday 16th February 2008, 10:55AM GMT.
After hearing on a national news bulletin recently that all Shropshire schools will not open “due to heavy snow” I peered nervously out of the window.
I was expecting to see drifts up to the window ledge, roads in chaos, people digging themselves out of eight-foot drifts and instead a clear blue sky greeted my gaze. A beautiful winter’s day here in Shropshire.
Just what kind of wimps are we now breeding? When I was 10 and living in the Wolverhampton area the school I went to never closed during the harsh winter of 1962/63.
Just look it up on the internet to see how bad it was. The snow came down on Boxing Day and it was April before it finally disappeared. No central heating, double glazing, gas fires etc.
This inexcusable action is indicative of the disgraceful state into which this once great nation has sunk.
On January 31 the funeral of a truly brave man took place in Ludlow. What would he have made of closing schools for fear of an itsy bitsy bit of snow?
Good job he did not consider the weather when trying to escape from a prisoner of war camp.

If the HSE had been around we would never have fought the second world war …..the risk assessment would have been against it…

Having recently returned from Norway I can only conclude that we don’t know how to cope with snow.
I was lucky enough to be able to visit one of the many ski resorts around Oslo.
Not only was I able to catch a direct train to the resort but many had travelled to the resort by car.
The overeaction in this country was laughable. A light powder of snow caused mass panic.

I must agree with you Dan. Last weekend my wife and I travelled to one of the higher passes here in BC. The weather forecast was for two feet – yes two feet of snow that night. The roads were only closed for a short time whilst crews shot down (potential) avalanches. The typical snowfall in that area during the season is 25 feet.
So far this winter season, even though snowfall has been higher than usual (with at least 9 to 10 feet of snow in most towns) schools and most highways haven’t been closed.
Sounds as though the Brits are once again moaning about their weather and making silly excuses for shutting down esential public services.

Close all the schools we can’t have cold kids. How would they text and play computer games with cold hands. Also it’s not fashionable to wear gloves and a scarf so don’t make them wear them!
They need more time at home to practice putting their feet up and getting to the next level on the playstation for when they leave school or more time to hang round by the shops.
you older generation shall never understand…learning..nah why bother… the state will pay!

The BBC don’t help or is it the Met Office? Hardly a day goes by without some “severe weather warning” becuase of a bit of rain/sleet/wind/mist take your pick. I reckon they are afraid of being sued so they do it to cover themselves – pathetic!
