Business ‘hit by traffic wardens’
Saturday 16th February 2008, 3:30PM GMT.
ParkRight is damaging trading and tourist opportunities in Shrewsbury, the chairman of the town’s business chamber has claimed.
Simon Airey said the chamber was continually approached by members of the business community with complaints about ParkRight wardens.
Mr Airey said: “We are concerned about the effect of the ParkRight operating procedures because it appears to be damaging trading and tourist opportunities. People are telling us they will shop elsewhere.
“Some local tradesmen are refusing to visit town centre properties for fear of the parking regulations.
“Communication seems to be a problem as commercial organisations are unaware of waivers, for example, for temporary parking in contravention of the regulations.
“They are available from Shropshire County Council with full details on their website.”
Mr Airey said the chamber would be holding a meeting with ParkRight to encourage a more tolerant attitude in the town.
He said: “I recently met Tony Randall, director of the Heritage Glass Group, whose driver had received a parking ticket, but he was unaware of the waiver system. There is clearly some way to go in publicising the working methods of ParkRight.”
Mr Randall, president of Shropshire Chamber of Commerce said: “The waivers have to obtained in advance, but we do not know in advance whether we would require a waiver or not. We have had lots of feedback from members on this topic, but now I have first-hand experience of the problems.”
Phil Crossland, Shropshire County Council’s assistant director for transport and highways, said he welcomed a meeting with the chamber.
He said: “We are happy to take into consideration these concerns and any suggestions the Shrewsbury Business Chamber has for better publicity.
“Information about ParkRight can be found on its dedicated website, through various stakeholders and through the press.”

Enough talk has gone on about these low paid morons put them back on in the dole que and get the people back in to town spending.

Its not ParkRight’s fault….it’s the ignorant people who don’t follow the rules etc. Park right and don’t get a ticket. Take a chance and get a ticket if you’re unluckly enough to get caught BUT DONT MOAN ABOUT IT IF YOU DO!!

Shrewsbury is a dying town and going down the same route as other small towns. It has nothing to offer other than a proliferation of charity shops. Not even a fishmongers.
Tourism to the town has declined due to 911.
Supermarkets & cheap online goods are taking away custom from any remaining shops in the town. Hopefully the vultures who go in the guise of parkrite will also go out of business but I very much doubt it.
So with the high cost of parking and lack of facilities. i.e one public toilet. I shall drive to Telford and do my shopping there.

Sometimes, tradesman etc need park “illegally” for a while in order to carry out their work. It is not always possible to carry all their tools and materials over a distance. As for pre-booking the waiver – well if it’s glass fitter or plumber etc and an urgent call it’s probably not going to planned is it?
If the council don’t want shoppers to pop-in and buy a mag or collect goods from a shop in town, then fine have ParkRight – I can and do take my business elsewhere.
I agree if you are shopping for longer than 10 minutes you should legally park in a car park etc.
But… personally I’m not going to pay to park for an hour, taking a 10 minute drive looking for somewhere to park and then another 10 minutes to walk to where I want to go, to spend 1 minute buying a mag or stamp, to spend the next 10 minutes getting back to my car only to find ParkRight have done me for being 1 inch over a bay anyway. As I say I take that kind of business elsewhere. I do use Park & Ride for longer shopping trips but I can’t help thinking that the business Shrewsbury misses from people just popping in on their way home etc, is lost and suspect that amounts to a lot of money.
The town centre will be full of new houses and no small shops at all – what a shame.

Yet again people moaning about parkright. As someone else said if you park right you won’t get a ticket. They are only doing their job.
Dave the dog…
“Tourism to the town has declined due to 911″.
I don’t think that comment is correct.
