Police officers believe they have traced the family of the man, who was pulled from the Llangollen Canal near Wrexham Road, Whitchurch, at about 3.30pm on Tuesday.

Attempts were made by ambulance staff to resuscitate the man, who was thought to be aged in his 80s, but he was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

The man’s death is being treated as unexplained and police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident at this stage.

The coroner for mid and north Shropshire, Mr John Ellery, has been informed and a post mortem will be held and an inquest opened.

Maria Hawkaluk, police spokeswoman, said: “Officers have traced who they believe to be the man’s family.”

The body of a dog was recovered from the canal at the same time but police have said it was thought to be unrelated.
