Bus travel deal may cut costs

Bus travel looks set to become a third cheaper for 16 to 18 year olds in south Shropshire if a new discount card scheme is agreed at a full council meeting due to be held this week.

A Youth Transport Card is expected to be recommended at the South Shropshire District Council meeting on Thursday.

The council’s Working Group was asked to consider the introduction of the bus travel discount card for young people last March.

The card scheme would be set up in conjunction with four of the district’s bus operators and five of its schools and colleges – Bishop’s Castle Community College, Church Stretton School, Lacon Childe School in Cleobury Mortimer, Ludlow College and Ludlow School.

The card will entitle the holder to a discount of 30 per cent for each journey they make.

In the future the scheme could also be expanded to include discounts at shops and leisure facilities.

But the recommendation at present is the scheme is only accepted for 12 months and does not run beyond March 1, 2009.
