Increase in rubbish on hillside

Sunday 10th February 2008, 12:14AM GMT.

Mike HarrisThe man responsible for looking after much of Shropshire’s landmark hill has been left with the headache of removing a mountain of domestic rubbish in the latest case of fly-tipping around The Wrekin.

More than 40 bags of household refuse – apparently thrown away by a young family – have been thrown over the hedge of a field owned by Raby Estates. Estate Manager Mike Harris will now have to bring in a skip to dispose of the mess.

Mr Harris is in charge of 5,500 acres of land around and on The Wrekin, including the hill fort at the summit, and claims the tipping problem has escalated over the past five years.

“We get something new every day,” he said. “People will leave anything. I’ve still got a pile of six old fridges.”

He said the dumping had traditionally been builders’ rubbish but he had noticed a recent increase in domestic waste.

Mr Harris is one of a series of people who contacted the Shropshire Star about fly-tipping problems after we featured a front page picture of a motor boat hull dumped near Shifnal.

This latest tipping site is close to the rifle range at the north western edge of The Wrekin. It is on a badger run and many of the black bin bags have now been ripped open by animals, with the thorn hedge festooned in flapping bits of plastic.

Mr Harris said: “The tippers have shopped at Tesco, Primark and Asda, judging by the carrier bags, and there is a surprising number of bags from Sports World.

“There’s lots of lager cans, plastic drinks bottles, egg packets, pan scrapers and washing powder packets – I have a feeling that it’s the waste from a young family – and much of it is recyclable.”

Mr Harris has started sifting through the bags for clues. He will pass on his findings to Telford & Wrekin Council for possible prosecution.
