A helpline set up after discrepancies showed up in pathology tests at Wrexham’s Maelor Hospital could close down at the end of the week. More than 1,000 people have rung the number.It was set up after doubts were raised over a limited number of pathology samples at the hospital, which treats some patients from Powys and Shropshire.

The hospital said today that of 1,220 patients who have phoned the helpline, 34 samples had been identified where there was a discrepancy between the new report and the original one.

The errors related to tissue samples reported on by Dr Roger Williams between April 2006 and September 2007.

Hospital spokesman Andy Scotson said that by February 1 the helpline had received 1,244 calls which included 124 “ring backs”.

“So far the trust has been able to get back to and reassure 1,069 that they have no reason for concern.”

He said 462 of the inquiries related to tissue samples examined by Dr Williams. All of these are being re-checked.

“So far, 447 of these checks have been completed and in total 34 samples have been identified where there is a discrepancy.”

The hospital continues to stress that the histopathology results are considered alongside a number of other diagnostic processes when considering diagnosis.
