Woman treated after pan fire
Saturday 2nd February 2008, 11:42AM GMT.
A woman needed medical treatment after inhaling smoke when a chip pan left on the cooker caught fire at her Telford home.
Two fire crews from Tweedale Fire Station and one from Telford Central, along with the incident commander from Shrewsbury, were called to the house in Maythorne Close, Sutton Hill, yesterday, shortly before 8pm.
The fire was out on arrival, but fire chiefs said it proved how dangerous it could be to leave cooking appliances unattended while being used and also the importance of working smoke alarms.
The property had a fully functional heat detector and smoke alarms.
Ambulance crews were called to the scene but did not take anyone to hospital.
Sub-officer Andy Blizard, from Tweedale, said: “The fire was caused by a chip pan fire which was left unattended on a cooker. There was smoke damage to the property but the fire had the potential to cause much more damage.
“Leaving cooking unattended, especially chip pans, can have catastrophic consequences. We urge people to stay in the room at all times when they are cooking.”
He said the woman had managed to put out the fire before they arrived but it could have easily spread through her property if she had not returned to the kitchen when she did or her alarms had not activated.
