Constable’s glowing picture

Saturday 2nd February 2008, 11:43AM GMT.

shrewsnewlogo.gifNew Shrewsbury striker James Constable today marked his return to the Football League by declaring: “It’s the move I’d hoped would happen.”The 23-year-old forward had been on the radar of manager Gary Peters throughout January, with his switch from Kidderminster finally completed less than an hour before the transfer window shut on Thursday evening.

Constable and his former Harriers team-mate Scott Bevan have both moved for undisclosed fees but, with Constable attracting the attention of a string of clubs, it’s likely Shrewsbury have made a substantial outlay for a player who has already bagged 12 goals this term.

Constable is determined to repay that faith and grab his chance of shining in the League.

“I’m absolutely delighted,” he said. “It’s been a real roller-coaster for the last few days because I had hoped the move would happen.

“Even at 6pm on Thursday I thought it was off but things got resolved and I just want to get going now.

“I had a brief time in the Football League at Walsall when Paul Merson took me there but he was sacked a couple of months after I arrived.

“Kevan Broadhurst came in and went quickly and then Richard Money took over and he brought his own strikers in.

“I’ve been at Kidderminster since and it’s been a really good 12 months with getting to Wembley (in the FA Trophy final) and I’ve scored goals.

“But when Shrewsbury came in for me I was desperate to go there. I drove over on Thursday and I didn’t need to get out of the car to decide I wanted to go there.

“As soon as I saw the ground I was sold and then speaking to the coaching staff and the chairman just added to that.”

Constable is now keen to establish himself as a first team regular. “I would like to think I’m a natural goalscorer because I’ve scored goals wherever I have been and hopefully that can continue here,” he added.

“I came into training yesterday and obviously saw Guy Madjo and David Hibbert at first hand and they’re both really good players.”
