Concerns over police numbers

Thursday 31st January 2008, 6:03AM GMT.

bobby1.jpgCalls have been made for a dedicated police patrol for Bridgnorth on weekend evenings, amid claims there are not enough officers to respond to incidents.

Councillors aired concerns officers had to take offenders from the town to cells in Shrewsbury or Telf ord between 11.30pm and 3am.

Town council procurement committee members yesterday claimed incidents were being picked up by the CCTV network but there were no officers to respond.

Committee chairman Councillor Mac Griffiths said there were not enough officers on patrol.

He said: “Bridgnorth is wide open between 11.30pm and 3am. Officers after 11.30pm are often engaged in taking people to Shrewsbury or Telford so there is no support on the ground. A lot of people have concerns about this.

“Bridgnorth is the busiest town in south Shropshire on a Friday and Saturday night with people coming from the West Midlands and Black Country. We do need more police in the town. We want a dedicated patrol in the town.”

Mayor Councillor Connie Baines said: “Volunteers are monitoring the CCTV but there is no-one to tell when an incident happens.”

A police spokesman said: “We will look into the concerns raised by the council but it’s incorrect to suggest the town council is not being policed late at night.

“There are officers on duty every night with an increased number at busier times such as Friday and Saturday evenings.”
