Sheep put on circular show
Monday 28th January 2008, 11:45AM GMT.
We have all seen formation flying – now sheep in a field on the Powys border appear to have taken up formation flocking.
It could have been an extreme case of follow my leader – or the sheep on a farm at Kington could be baa-king mad, but, whatever the reason, about 100 of the animals managed to form an almost perfect circle.

Estate agent Russell Bird was on hand with his camera to snap the phenomenon.
He said the flock stayed in formation for about 10 minutes and only broke rank when the farmer appeared on his tractor.
“I was quite taken aback,” he said. “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
“I did see a dog worrying sheep nearby beforehand and the dog ran off round the hedge in a different field, so I don’t know if they were discussing that.”
Mr Bird said he saw a similar circle of sheep in a nearby field, but didn’t manage to get a picture of that before they moved off.
Our best guess is that the farmer is feeding the flock extra rations and driving around in a circle in order to drop the feed off – but you may know better.

They were playing follow-my-leader. Our Government has been doing it for years.

They’re communicating with their mothership in orbit. I always thought they looked strange.

The farmer must have driven round in a circle, dropping ewe nuts for them to eat.

Its obvious Farmer Jones is on his way so its form a circle!

Perhaps the farmer laid their feed down in a circle?

Maybe they are munching on the extra tasty growth from a Fairy Ring? Some fungi also produce chemicals that act like hormones called gibberellins, which affects plant growth, causing rapid luxuriant growth.

They could be listening to the ewes. lol.

An interesting visual image but don’t insult intelligence of readers by inferring something other than the circle of food. Unless the journo really didn’t realise (clean green wellies still in the car boot?)
