New striker still a target
Thursday 24th January 2008, 11:42AM GMT.
Gary Peters today hinted his latest round of Shrewsbury Town squad rebuilding was drawing to a close by predicting few fresh arrivals this summer
The arrival of Guy Madjo, Kevin McIntyre, Asa Hall, James Meredith and the since departed Keith Briggs during January have taken Peters’ tally of signings in his 38-month reign to 61 – including non-contract and loan moves.
That figure could increase slightly before the transfer window closes next week.
Peters insists that high turnover of players is not out of the ordinary as he attempts to transform the club’s fortunes , but is confident there will be no repeat of the glut of close-season signings seen under previous years of his tenure.
“I think you expect that sort of thing (61 signings) in three years,” he said.
“Some are loan players and quite a few have been young, and not all of them are going to come through.
“Some of the players we have brought in have helped us out for a season or two and then you have to move them on to continue improving the squad.
“Others, like Joe Hart, Dave Edwards, Luke Rodgers and Darren Moss, we have had to move on because we have had good offers when they are coming to the end of their contracts
“We have got the nucleus of a squad signed on for next season and the players we will need to bring in is likely to be very small in the summer.”
Peters continues to remain on the hunt for at least one striker before the end of the transfer window, but saw his scouting plans go astray last night.
The Town boss planned to take in the clash between Gretna – Peters has been linked with a move for their striker Kenny Deuchar – and Morton but saw the Scottish Cup clash postponed when he arrived.
Andy Cooke’s calf injury sustained in Tuesday night’s reserve team 1-1 draw with Wolves will be assessed today to see if the striker will be fit for Saturday’s trip to Grimsby.
Places on the coaches for that game, and the visit to Bradford on Tuesday, remain available from the Super Blues on 01952 604742 or the Official Supporters Club on 01743 770001 or 07981 593 437.
l Managing director Rob Bickerton will meet Town supporters in a question and answers session in the Arthur Rowley Bar at Oteley Road at 7.30pm tonight.

There is little time now to the close of the transfer window for GP to see Kenny Deucher so I would have thought he will not be signing for Town. Pity, he sounds an excellant striker

A new manager would be a good target.

Kavan – Leave GP alone he is doing a good job.
It is unrealistic to expect continuous progress. Sometimes it has to be 2 Steps forward and 1 back.
Get behind GP and the team

Mr Deuchar aka The good Doctor (Jeff Stelling – Sky Sports) was at Northampton last year – unsuccessfully if I remember correctly!
PS Leave GP alone – give him a little more time!
