Peters says no to Briggs

Keith BriggsKeith Briggs today saw his aspirations of securing a long-term future at Shrewsbury Town dashed.Manager Gary Peters confirmed the 27-year-old midfielder, who has been on non-contract terms for the last fortnight, has been released.

Briggs found the net on his only start in blue and amber in the 3-1 defeat at Hereford, made a brief substitute appearance in Saturday’s victory over Morecambe and expressed his desire to secure an extended contract at Oteley Road.

But Peters admitted the former Stockport County man – who missed out on a reserve team outing in the 1-1 draw against Wolves last night through illness – hadn’t done enough to secure a permanent contract.

“Keith wasn’t able to play last night as he was under the weather so there was no point in prolonging it,” said the Town boss.

“He came in for a week or two, trained with us and had that bit of experience but he wasn’t what we were looking for,” said Peters.

“He could do a decent job on the right side of midfield, but not in an attacking sense like Chris Humphrey.

“He can play central midfield but we have got Asa Hall, David Hunt, Jimmy Ryan and Kevin McIntyre in there. And he can play right back, but we aren’t in need of anyone there.

“If we had signed Keith it would have been for the sake of it and that’s not something I want to do.”

Peters insists Briggs’ departure will not force his hand to bring in a new central midfield.

But he has not ruled out rekindling his interest in Shane Tudor.

The Port Vale winger has had his name circulated by manager Lee Sinnott as being available for loan, and that may tempt Peters, who initially took the former Wolves man on a temporary move in November but saw that spell wrecked by injury.

“Shane’s a right winger and it might be something that we can look at,” he added.

“The way we are playing and passing the ball, Shane could make a difference, but he wouldn’t want to come to us unless he’s fully fit.

“It’s not dead and buried and it is something we will have to consider.”

Town also remain on the hunt for a striker and hope the calf injury which forced Andy Cooke off after 35 minutes second string action at the New Bucks Head last night isn’t serious.

Lets face facts he is 27 years old and too experienced for Peters !

Another fine example of the negativity of posters to this web site.

1 goal in 2 appearances actually and when was that ever a reasonable indicator of a player’s abilities? Jody Banim looked brilliant on his debut for the Shrews and turned out to be only a fraction above poor in a Town shirt under Jimmy Quinn.

Pugh, Leslie, Ryan, Hunt, McIntyre, Davies, Hall, Humphrey – got to ask what Briggs would add to that midfield. He’d have struggled to get in the team.

John Larsen – he also played as sub v Morecombe, so 1 goal in 2 games. Not a bad average though!

I think Briggs was worth looking at as he’d played over 200 games in the lower leagues. But as he plays right midfield – a positon Davies often plays in – he’d have been unlikely to get many starts.

Plus the first impressions of Asa Hall suggest he could be a very good adition to our midfield.

1 goal in 1 game, not a bad return, Since then he’s had flu by all accounts. Now we show him the door!

If he wasn’t good enough, why bring him in in the first place. He’s 27 years old, so no rookie. Do we not check out the merchandise first? What happened to scouting?

In his placed, I’d be miffed. Peters has effectively robbed him of any chance to join another club in the transfer window and generally messed him around.

Little wonder players appear to think twice before coming to Salop.

Andy – Brigg’s agent contacted Town to see if he could have a trial here, so he’s not a player Peters would have scouted.

He signed on a non contract basis so that as well as training with the team he could also play in first team games – giving Peter’s a good chance to look at him for a few weeks. This happens a lot with out of contract players and costs us as a club next to nothing.

Peter’s has seen Briggs in training for three weeks, so probably has a better idea of his qualities than we do as fans, as we’re only seen him play 2 games for us.

meadow matt – Spot on. Great to see someone out there knows how football works.

Whilst Briggs has undoubted qualities and experience it was unfortunate for him, but it was plain to see that he could not bring anything to the club that we didn’t already have, he would have only played if we were hit with an injury crisis. (had he been signed it would only have added to the wage bill)

Once Gary had made his mind up the player was informed before the transfer window closed to give him the best chance of finding another club.
