Driver tells of her flood ordeal
Wednesday 23rd January 2008, 11:35AM GMT.
The Shropshire women who spent all night trapped in her car after it was washed away by flood water today revealed it was her friend who had helped save her life.
Lesley North, 45, said her prayers were answered when friend Fritha Scowcroft, whom she had been to visit the night before, eventually saw her car marooned in Borle Brook ford, in Billingsley, near Bridgnorth.
Mrs Scowcroft, who had changed her normal journey at the last minute, raised the alarm and police managed to rescue Miss North after 11 hours in the car.
Devoted Christian Miss North was driving home to Highley on Sunday night when her car stalled crossing the ford and it was washed 75-yards downstream. She was trapped and admitted she feared for her life before she was saved at 9am on Monday.
Recovering, but still visibly shaken by her 11-hour ordeal, Stafford University law student Miss North said she could not thank her friend enough and believes her survival was down to divine intervention.
“I am a Christian so I was praying to God all night and making a bargain with him. I prayed to him to protect me and I got through by singing hymns and choruses,” she said.
“Cars began passing at about 6am but no-one heard my screams until the friend I had been to see the previous night came along.”
Police officers formed a human chain to reach Miss North, who said she had not been reckless by trying to cross the ford as other drivers had done so.

From knee deep water 3 feet from the bank? Go to Bangladesh Miss North , see a real flood.

Without wanting to sound horrible, would it not have been better for her to try and get out of the car instead of sitting there for 11 hours?
Dont get me wrong, Im pleased she is ok, but surely there would have been other options avaliable to her?

‘confused’ an option for the lady would surely be to slide to the passenger seat and just srep onto the bank!!!! by the looks of the picture too the only thing that would have got wet is her feet. the obvious action i would have taken was to not enter the water in the first place and find another way home

Is everyone forgetting it was pitch black, How on earth was Miss North to know the bank was so close. As anyone will know it is very hard to restart a car in flooded water.

i think your all being quite mean to her, when your in a sitaution like that the simple things slip your mind and you dont think logicaly.it seems whatever she did she would be critised.

Lou, it may have been pitch black, but the car’s headlights would still have been working. And the very fact that the water hadn’t reached even the sills would have been an indication of its depth too.
And, Faith, what on earth slipped this lady’s mind when she drove her car into what was clearly something of a raging torrent in the first place?!
If she had turned around and found another route she would have come in for no criticism at all.

Peter: But then she wouldn’t have her own news story, would she?

if you happened to be in this situation would you not want people to be symapthetic to you. Not everyone thinks the same. Some people may have looked at it and thought they could have gotten through it.also its very hard to turn around down there.
