Beauty is truth

I find that poetry is like art, you either like it or you don’t, writes teen blogger Rhian.

I read a poem recently though and I liked it because it flew in the face of the conclusions which too many people jump to, too often.

It concerned two men, one of them elderly, waiting to cross a road and watching a boy racer revving his car and fishtailing it past them with a grin on his face.

The younger man didn’t approve and he supposed that the older one would react more angrily, but instead, he just smiled and said that he hoped the boy racer would live long enough to teach his own children to drive.

He said that, because the boy reminded him of his friend from many years ago, a fellow pilot who was shot down and killed during the Battle of Britain.

He said it was better that the boy racer should spin his wheels and make the old folks frown, than walk his girl down Hitler Strasse in the heart of London town.

It made me think too, sometimes, disasters and crises can prompt the most unlikely heroes to step forth.

So whilst older generations are often prone to assume that most teenagers are rotten, basing their opinions on the poor behaviour of a few, perhaps we should all be well advised not to be too quick to judge, after all.
