Midfielder Jon Adams seems set to sacrifice his place in the England futsal squad – and a trip to Malaysia – in order to focus on his AFC Telford United career.

The former Leamington ace, who turns 23 on Tuesday, has been named in boss Graeme Dell’s squad for the World 5s Futsal Tournament in Kuala Lumpar at the end of the month.

The side will play group games against Argentina, China, Australia and the hosts Malaysia in a competition that is being treated as a warm up for February’s World Cup qualifiers in the Hungarian capital of Budapest.

But Adams is preparing to pull out in order to focus on Telford’s Blue Square North clash with Hucknall on January 26 instead.

“I spoke to the gaffer (Rob Smith) at training on Thursday and he doesn’t want me to go, and I sort of expected that,” said Adams, who was expected to line up for the Bucks against Workington today.”I’ve got to speak to the England manager and explain the situation and we’ll take it from there.

“I’ve worked hard to get myself in the Telford side and I’m now starting to really push on so it would be a blow if someone else did well while I was away. I’d be shooting myself in the foot.

“I love the futsal and playing for your country is massive. It means the world to me so, while it’s not a bad problem to have, it’s a decision I’d rather not have to make.”

Adams bagged his first goal for the Bucks in the 4-1 thrashing of Tamworth on New Year’s Day, and assistant manager Larry chambers added: “I don’t think he can afford to take seven days off right now.

“He’s got in the side and he wants to cement his place.”
