Music Hall set for a change

Theatre Severn has quickly risen up in Shrewsbury’s Frankwell dominating the sky-line and leaving an atmosphere of anticipation as it takes shape. It is set to open in February 2009.
It will be able to welcome bigger and more varied acts through its doors than the Music Hall and will put Shrewsbury on the map as the cultural capital of the rural West Midlands.
The Music Hall is being redeveloped into a museum after being a theatre for more than 150 years.
But it was not originally built as a theatre and Lezley Picton, borough council cultural services manager, said Shrewsbury had outgrown it and if it continued as a theatre, the building would be damaged.
She said often the Music Hall was unable to put on performances by certain companies because it could not accommodate all the scenery or a large cast and the building needed a softer use as parts of it date back to the 13th century and theatre is a very hard use on it.
Ms Picton explained the whole experience at the new theatre would be different.
Adam Burgan, programme and marketing manager, said: “The really exciting thing about the new theatre has been the number of calls from performers from all over the country who know a theatre is being built in Shrewsbury.”

“Theatre Severn” is that what it’s going to be called?
That really is a terrible name.
