computer-room-2.jpgShrewsbury Sixth Form College students who skip lessons to join a protest march over plans to relocate their college to a campus in London Road will face disciplinary action.

Dozens of pupils are expected to take to the town’s streets tomorrow morning to protest over the multi-million pound plans to co-locate the sixth form college and Shrewsbury College of Arts and Technology.

But they have been warned that if they leave scheduled lessons to take part, action will be taken.

A spokeswoman for Shrewsbury Sixth Form said today: “What the students were told was that if they are in lessons they should not be doing it, if it is a free period that is fine.

“We said that if you leave your scheduled lessons, for whatever reason, there are consequences. In the same way as if you got up and left a lesson because you were bored.”

All teachers at Shrewsbury Sixth Form have been warned by head Bill Dowell that attending the meeting could result in disciplinary action.

Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski will join the students on the protest march starting from the Quarry tomorrow at 11.30am.

The MP is hosting an open meeting to discuss the plans at the Guildhall in Frankwell, Shrewsbury, this evening at 7pm.

What a wonderful example of democracy and the right to free speech and expression. This type of threat is typical of the society we have become.
Shall we be afraid to protest against the poll tax, giving women the vote or any issue that affects us. Yes in todays society it wiould appear that even those former free thinking individuals who are the educators of our children are taking a stance for suppression of expression.
As to whether they are right or not is a matter of opinion. Finances are often such that perhaps the relocation will be beneficial and will free up funding , however that is not the issue here. The issue is the threat against those who should have the right to speak and express their opinion in their world and certainly in their home town on an issue that they feel is important.

students should leave and go on mass the idiots who are issueing theses silly threats should realise if they get rid of the students they have no college to co-locate have they ?,
The impression i am getting is if you are a student or member of staff at these places you are being barred from expressing an opinion .

Bill Dowell is still trying isn’t he? Why does he feel he has the right to threaten staff and students like this?

Is there anyone Bill Dowell has not threatened this week?

First the teachers can’t go to the public meeting?

Now the students can’t go on the march?

Who is next, the cleaners? The librarian?

Scheduled lessons on Friday the 21st of December…er..I don’t think so. More an attempt at heading off unwanted publicity. Theres a lot of local vested interested in this {the usual suspects no doubt..I wonder if it’ll be another tender avoidance exercise?}. I suggest the council tax payers of this borough watch this scheme unfold with eyes like an outhouse rat!

Good luck to the students (and staff).

We all have the right in this country to stand up for our rights. If we don’t we will end up with horrors like Beijing protests, in the future, where they bring the militia in.

    Go for it students!!!!!!

Students should remain in lessons that they signed up to! If they are free then of course go.

Can you imagine getting up from your desk during work hours to protest against your employer! Back to Scargill and the 70′s, remember the bin men!

Protest in your free time and the world will run in a smooth way.

And too note, I’m totaly for this move! Focus should be on the improved learning environment for students, and not how many ‘butties’ Greggs will or won’t sell at lunch time.

And to Mr Angry, read what has actually been, or in this case NOT been said.

    1. The teachers were NOT told they couldn’t go.

    2. The students were NOT told they couldn’t march.

The journalism on this leaves alot to be desired and even puts the Sun to shame!

up for it, they were in a muted threat way, you as an employee go to the meeting by all means but do not say anything negative about the proposal or else ?, you can march but if you have a class when it is on you must attend the class, were the classes still being run on the last day of term at the said march time last year??

Andrew, yes, they were being run last year.

Also, what you or any other individual ‘interprets’ something to meen shouldn’t be reported on. The problem with press these days is that far too many stories are ‘beefed’ up to sell papers.

I have seen this said letter and to say it ‘threatens’ leaves alot to be desired.
