Collision fear after vandal spree
Tuesday 18th December 2007, 11:40AM GMT.
Drivers and cyclists could have been killed or seriously injured after vandals targeted roads in Oswestry, police said today.
Nearly 30 drain covers were removed and thrown into the verge in and around the town, which police say could have caused a “major collision”.
Breeze blocks were also placed in the road and some gates taken off their hinges which could have left livestock to stray into the traffic.
Police condemned the vandalism as highly irresponsible and dangerous and have appealed to the public to help track down the culprits.
A total of 27 drain covers were removed from Morda Road, from its junction with Lower Brook Street, in Oswestry town centre through to Trefonen Road and into Trefonen.
Police said it was likely they were removed overnight on Friday.
A police spokesman said: “This is highly irresponsible and dangerous behaviour. It could have caused a major collision resulting in someone being killed or seriously injured.”
Several bins were also tipped over in the same area.
The spokesman added: “We would welcome any information which might help us trace the people responsible.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 08457 444888, or alternatively, the anonymous Crimestoppers number, 0800 555111.
