Ballot over new homes
Tuesday 18th December 2007, 11:40AM GMT.
Residents in Much Wenlock headed to the ballot box today to vote on whether more housing should be built in the town while flooding and traffic problems remain unresolved.
The referendum has been forced by a group of residents who claim the town cannot cope with more development.
They are calling for Bridgnorth District Council to impose a blanket ban on future development.
The vote was held after the group of seven residents invoked a rarely applied law to have the parish poll.
They claim development has added to the town’s flooding problems, which saw more than 50 homes damaged during the deluges this summer. The group also feels the town’s roads cannot cope.
Today’s referendum follows a public meeting when residents voted 43 to 3 in favour of holding the parish referendum under a rarely applied section of the 1972 Local Government Act. It had to be held within 25 days of the meeting.
The voting was taking place at The Priory Hall, Bull Ring, between 4pm and 9pm and the result will be sent to Bridgnorth District Council, although it is not legally binding on the authority.
The district council’s democratic services manager, Adrian Dean, said: “We are expecting a higher turn-out than at normal elections as it is an issue that affects the town directly.”
County councillor for Much Wenlock, Dave Gibbon, said he was also expecting a good turn-out.
He said: “People see it as an opportunity to show their frustration. It’s fairly obvious that it is not right to continue building houses with the way things are.”

Nothing to do with floods or traffic its called being a nimby , nothing wrong with that, but the most vocal are more than likely interlopers any way.

Telford and Wrekin Council have just dismissed our referendum as a “Parish Poll”.
Lets hope Bridgnorth Council does better.

So the people of wenlock don;t want their precious town spoilt by new homes- it’s pathetic how hard they try to preserve their “utopia” by pretending that new homes caused the flooding last year, which hit the whole country regardless of housing problems. Floods in wenlock have occured before so it is not something new.

So what happened to democracy? Its not like the residents there have got any right to say anything about it! Its all been decided already…

I think we need a referendum in Bridgnorth itself over all the new houses being built here. The town is creaking at the seams as it is.

Its not just about flooding ..wih every house that is built you get at least 2 extra cars which have to negotiate very narrow streets causing traffic to use pavements, residents have to put up with all types of vehicles 2 feet from their front doors. If nothing is done about the problems this small town will eventualy grind to a halt!

Perhaps we could stop them building all over Bridgnorth (please)? It’s not like the houses are to support a natural growth in the existing population – they will all go to incomers. There is no effective limit to the number of people wanting to move in – and they’ll only stop when Shropshire has been destroyed by urban sprawl like much of the South East.
