Inquest on officer set to begin

A full inquest on a Shropshire police officer shot dead while protecting his unarmed colleagues will begin today.
Constable Ricky Gray was gunned down by rat-catcher Peter Medlicott, 33, when he attended a domestic dispute in Shrewsbury on May 6.
The 43-year-old was called to the aid of two colleagues being held at gunpoint by Medlicott at his flat in the Castlefields area of the town.
Mr Medlicott is believed to have shot the police officer before turning the .222 calibre rifle he used for pest control on himself.
The five-day inquest at Shrewsbury Crown Court will investigate the deaths of both men after Mr John Ellery, coroner for Mid and North Shropshire, said they were “inextricably linked”.
Today’s hearing will be an “overview”, with Detective Sergeant Al Crossley expected to give evidence on the circumstances surrounding the double shooting.
Home Office pathologists Dr Eddie Tapp and Dr Peter Acland, who carried out the post mortems on Constable Gray and Mr Medlicott, are expected to give evidence.
Constable Gray’s partner at the incident and the unarmed officers are expected to take the stand tomorrow.
The hearing is expected to last five days and will take place before a jury.
