Bail for five held over attacks
Tuesday 4th December 2007, 11:42AM GMT.
Five men arrested in connection with an alleged racist attack in Newport have now been released on bail without charge, pending further police inquiries.
Three law students from Trinidad and their English friend were racially abused and then attacked by a group of teenagers on High Street, Newport, at about 10pm on November 24.
Police said they were investigating it as a racist incident and appealed for the help of Newport people in tracking down the youngsters.
Chris Ammonds, police spokesman, said today: “The five arrested have been released on police bail pending further inquiries by officers. They are due to return and answer their bail in late January.
“We are still looking for any further witnesses to come forward.”
The students – two men and a woman in their 30s – were with the fiance of their tutor at Wolverhampton University when several teenage men and women allegedly racially abused them.
Violence began when the student group remonstrated with the youngsters.
The students and their friend suffered cuts and bruises from being punched and kicked by the gang, it is claimed.
The incident is being investigated by the specialist hate crimes unit.
