A man in his 50s was airlifted to hospital following a road collision in Telford today.A white Vauxhall Astra and a silver Toyota collided on the A4169, near Horsehay, at about 12.50pm.

The Toyota ended up on its side, while firefighters had to cut the roof off the Astra to release the injured man.

He was flown to Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham for treatment.

Police had to close the road between Castlefields roundabout and Jiggers Bank roundabout and were setting up diversions.

Daphne Lewis, for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: “A male in his 50s was airlifted to Selly Oak with serious abdominal and pelvic injuries.

“It was a side impact collision involving serious damage.”

Firefighters from Wellington fire station attended and freed the injured man from the Astra.

No-one in the Toyota was seriously injured.

A Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “It was a road traffic collision involving two vehicles.

“One person, a male, was trapped, and released from his vehicle using cutting equipment.

“He was conveyed to hospital via air ambulance,” she added.

Anyone with information about the collision is urged to contact Telford police on 08457 444888.

Having been overtaken by idiots that cross the unbroken white line so that they can “get there a little faster” on that particular road many many times I am not at all surprised.

If it was a side impact (as detailed above), it is unlikely that it was due to someone overtaking to “get there a little faster”. I agree that it can be a dangerous road but it might have been nicer to express your concern and sympathy for the injured man, rather than second guessing the cause of the incident.

Typical response from John Smith, no thought for those affected by this accident, just another good excuse to have a moan!! Try a little sympathy and understanding, not just jumping to an unfounded conclusion. Have a nice christmas one and all!!

I stopped at the scene of the accident immediately following it. I am therefore pleased to hear that the injured man is stable, and I do hope he makes a full recovery – both he and his sister (?) were very brave. I send them both, and the driver of the other vehicle my best wishes.
