Presents to last past Boxing Day
Saturday 1st December 2007, 3:45PM GMT.
Socks, bubble bath, jumpers – all traditional gifts and a safe option for those not wanting to rock the boat on Christmas Day.
But now December 1 is here maybe it’s a good time to add some oomph to your Christmas shopping.
While the iPhone might be the most sought-after gadget on the High Street, there’s much more excitement all wrapped up right here in Shropshire.
Maybe it’s time to start thinking about gifts which broaden the horizons.
The gift of a day or experience to remember is going to be one which makes an impact on December 25 and in years to come.
And there are plenty to choose from in Shropshire.
The Old Vicarage Activity Centre in Stottesdon has just launched a new collection of gifts called a Christmas Present to Remember.
And they certainly are, with such delights on offer as horse riding, mountain biking or laser tag.
For a pre-Christmas treat consider the mountain bike or horse trek through the Shropshire countryside (aimed at beginners – intermediate) on Sunday, December 16.
Both are £25 including bike hire from the new fleet, and those taking part will all meet for mince pies and mulled wine at the end.
On December 29 there will be a laser tag tournament at £22 per person
Either treat all the family and pull together your own team of eight players or attend and make one up on the day.
Swimming pool canoe and kayak training will be included in the January list of events at £20.
And there will be a multi-activity day at the centre on January 26 for £30.
Why not give someone the chance to try some of the many activities run on site, including archery, zip line, climbing and caving.
For the really adventurous there is a whitewater rafting event at Bala on February 9 at £50.
Adventurous gift vouchers are now available by contacting 01746 718436.
That’s just the start if you are looking for something a bit different in the county.
The footplate experience at the Severn Valley Railway would make a memorable gift.
It’s an introductory course which is ideal for the novice, or there’s the Steam Supreme course for the dedicated steam enthusiast at £740.
That includes a 32 mile return journey with the chance to drive and fire a locomotive for the full 32 miles.
For just £100 a loved one can try out being a blacksmith at the Ironbridge Gorge Museum.
Or take a look at Ineedpampering.com for offers in Shropshire, including a pamper day for him at £95 at a top Shropshire spa.
Then there’s always the traditional favourites.
The Shropshire Golf Centre has a package which includes coffee andÊa bacon bap, 18 holes on the main course and a two-course course meal for £24 on a weekday.
For high flying adventurers pick up a voucher from Virgin Balloon Flights which are currently priced from £120 with several launch sites in Shropshire.
Looking for a more sedate but intriguing gift? Weston Park on the Shropshire border is hosting a heritage conservation study day in February.
At £48.50 per person it includes the lecture, two-course luncheon in the house and a tour of the house.
Shopping for Christmas gifts has never been so much fun.
