Robinson returns home
Friday 30th November 2007, 11:39AM GMT.
Birmingham Cricket League newcomers Oswestry have pulled off a coup – by persuading former bowler Mark Robinson to return from Wellington.
Spinner Robinson, now an established part of the Shropshire attack in the Minor Counties Championship, has left Orleton Park to return to his roots at Morda Road.
It is a big boost to Oswestry, who are gearing up for their first season in division three of the Birmingham League after winning the Proactive Shropshire Premier League.
The Border men are eager to avoid the same fate as Wem, who have been relegated straight back down after their first year at the higher level.
Robinson came through the ranks at Morda Road, where his father is club captain, but moved to Wellington two years ago to test himself at a higher level.
But the regular travelling from his Oswestry home has taken its toll on the young star, and he jumped at the opportunity to go back.
He has also been named as Oswestry’s vice captain for the 2008 season, with Ian Davies re-appointed as skipper at their AGM.
Oswestry have also managed to secure the services of South African pro Warrick Fynn for another year.
Fynn proved a big hit in Oswestry last year, and recently added to his burgeoning reputation at home by hitting his maiden First Class century for Eastern Province against Border – then taking 6-59 in the second innings of the same match.
“Warrick was superb for us last season and we’re delighted he’s coming back,” said Robinson snr.

big fish nice warm and friendly pond that he does not have to travel very far too.. good luck geeze hope all goes well.

They have some travelling to do next year.. Oswestry to Brockhampton is about 90 miles!

Personally think the guy is very over-rated.Bowls a lot of rubbish. His batting shows more promise than his bowling. That said, his wickets will be a great loss to Wellington.
Big E has hit the nail on the head.

Decent player, however was one of my 5 victims when we played wellington so perhaps he is overated

No wonder wellington got relegated if you could get five wickets against them! just shows how poor there batting was last season!

Well done Geeze, think you have made the right decision. Speaking from personal experience you will enjoy your cricket far more and you could never expect to be number 1 spinner at wellington. Not the best left arm spinner oswestry has ever seen but not a bad one. All the best mate
D Barnes what are your Shropshire stats? Can’t say i’ve heard of you

The stats don’t lie colonel.

yeah that’s why robinson has a better bowling average than you last season!

Paul Rowe – who are you? Are you that young medium pacer from Kenilworth?

Good luck to the geezer back at his home town club – I am sure he will flourish in Division 3 as he has got genuine talent, if he can only cut out the 3 long hops and 1 full toss per over I am sure he will take a bagful of wickets!! He has got a lot of admirers, none more so than himself!

i’d like to state that it was a tongue in cheek comment that i made previously and actually have a lot of respect for most club cricketers

Not being a player myself but somebody who does watch quite a bit of local cricket,i have to agree with DBarnes. His batting is much better than his bowling, which seems to be a bag of liquorice allsorts week in week out.Magic ball then long hop.Never the less,he should get a stack of runs and wickets in division 3.But he is very much overated and not as good as what he thinks he is.Rather like quite a few Oswestry players down the years.

I like to see players who bosh the ball about and clearly the young Robinson can do that, his bowling is also of a very high standards as the stats show. DBarnes is obviously deluded!

Thanks for all the constructive (and not so constructive) comments. If only some of you had informed me two years earlier of my propensity to bowl long hops and full tosses on such a regular basis, perhaps I would have finished top in my two seasons in the Premier rather than second and eleventh. Still, most would accept a better strike rate than Richard Illingworth at less than 3.5 runs per over. I have belief in my own ability, surely something that is a prerequisite for any young bowler.
Comgrats to Ralphy for topping the batting averages last season. Good effort pal and I’m sure you’ll get that ton next season.

All the best Robbo. At least now you dont have to worry about getting up early in the morning after a night on the ale. You can just stumble out of bed and step straight out on to the field. lol..
I’ve no doubt that you are going to blitz that league with both bat and ball.
Have a good one son.

very nicely put mr Robinson… those long hops can be a great ball on big grounds.. he he. hope too see you during the season geeeeese….

Ben Platt,i don’t need to of played cricket to a decent level to have an opinion.I think there are some sour grapes over your time at Wellington, and if you want to look at some stats, look at Adam Byrams and perhaps you will see why you were not the number 1 left arm spinner at Wellington during your brief stay.

Talk is cheap. Let’s see if all those trying to knock Mr Robinson down are doing so at the end of this season.
It’s easy to watch and judge A Hughes, although perhaps not as easy to pass comment and to spell correctly!
As for ‘Mr Lack of Knowledge’. If I looked that good and my other two balls an over were wicket taking deliveries I’d be full of self admiration…………

D Barnes i have fond memories of my time at Wellington and parted on good terms with both club and players. I never claimed to be number one spinner at Wellington, if you read my comment properly you would have known that. I left because it wasn’t my idea of fun spending all day and night on the road to play cricket and not because i wasn’t given a fair chance. It’s easy to sit from the side and give your opinions but its a shame they are not very constructive. I think if you look at my stats i didn’t do so bad….

I only wish Robbo had joined the dragons. He’s a quality player with a lot of talent and will do very well for Oswestry.

geez is one of the best spinners i have ever faced and when bowling at his best there is no one better in the county. I can understand that the lure of a hometown club is a big one. It will just be a shame to not play league cricket against hime next year. good luck buddy, hope to see you back in the shropshire team.
