An eight-year-old Shropshire girl has doodled her way to success in a national arts competition.

Katie Roberjot, of Telford, beat off competition from more than 68,000 youngsters to finish in the top 12 of the Doodle 4 Google: My Future competition. Schoolchildren from across the country were invited to design a new Google-themed logo and more than 210,000 votes were cast by members of the public.

Katie took the runner-up spot in the five to eight-year-olds category, having already been crowned winner in the regional stage. Her entry was called Growing Up.

To celebrate her success, Katie was invited to attend an event in London, along with 47 other regional winners and their parents.

Katie, a pupil at Old Hall School, Wellington, spent her morning visiting London’s Tate Modern art gallery before heading to Google’s UK head office in Victoria, London.

She also met Google’s master doodler Dennis Hwang to learn some of his doodling tips, before attending an event, where Katie was announced as the runner-up in her age category.

Katie, who lives on the edge of The Wrekin, said: “I have really enjoyed taking part in this year’s Doodle 4 Google competition and am so excited that I did so well in my age category. Thank you to everyone who voted for me.”

The overall contest winner was Claire Rammelkamp, 14, from Bristol, whose design will be viewed by millions when it features as the Google logo for a day. Judge Mr Hwang said: “”Katie’s doodle entry caught the expert judges’ eyes for its use of images of herself growing up.”
